40 books every child should read

It’s always interesting to see lists of books like this. I especially like to compare them to past collections of books. Here is one from 1907 “Children’s Books and Reading” by Montrose J. Moses and at the end is a bibliography. That list is quite different, with real classics such as Aesop, Anderssen, Grimm brothers, Kipling (who I really liked as a child), retellings of Don Quixote, Shakespeare, Homer and so on. One book I discovered in this list, I think I would have loved as a boy, “What Mr. Darwin saw in his voyage round the world in the Beagle” if only because of the wonderful drawings. Maybe times have changed too much and kids wouldn’t like these books today. I don’t know.
